Microcredit as a tool for combating financial exclusion in Italy: the differences on a regional and local level

This paper proposes a mapping of microcredit (social and productive) in the period from 2005 to 2013 in three main Italian regions. Later we offer a description of the micro-credit initiatives promoted by cooperative credit banks trying to take advantage of any differences in the initiatives promoted by other types of operators in terms of default rates of loans. The differences will be commented on the basis of the distinctive features of this category of these relationship banks in order to identify a possible way of development of microcredit in Italy

The paper deals with the role that local banks (especially credit cooperative banks) might play in financially supporting the development of technological districts and innovative firms. After introducing the concept and features of technological districts, it focuses on the relations between districts and local banks and between the adoption of innovation and local banking. The central part is an econometric exercise aimed at measuring the weight of high value financial services over the income of a sample of Italian credit cooperative banks. Lo scopo di questo lavoro è quello di esaminare la relazione tra banca locale e impresa in un contesto economico in profondo cambiamento. L’obiettivo è comprendere se e come l’orientamento all’attività di finanziamento delle banche locali (più radicate nel territorio e più vicine ai principi del relationship lending) sia cambiato in seguito allo scoppio della crisi finanziaria.
